Revitalizing an Existing Structure – A Cat Café Designed for Feline Joy & Human Delight

MeowMe – A Cat-Lover’s Café in Taichung

Starting from an existing layout, this project revitalizes the space with new functions and brand identity, aiming to differentiate the business and tap into the cat café market in central Taiwan.

​

The original site was a Japanese-style hotpot restaurant named “Yi Ye Zhi Qiu.”
The owner decided to transform it into a hybrid space combining a cat house and a café.
We retained the kitchen and counter areas, and removed the original booth partitions to create visual transparency across both floors, maximizing the vertical openness of the site.
This design move leveraged the building’s natural height, delivering a compelling iconic visual — a key element in all of our commercial space projects.

Blending Japanese Warmth with Modern Simplicity

To manage costs, we preserved the Japanese architectural character of the original structure.
Only minimal adjustments were made to the exterior, while the interior was refreshed using natural wood and white-painted surfaces, merging Japanese elements with a clean, modern aesthetic.
The result is a space that feels bright, airy, and harmonious.

Designing for the True Stars – The Cats

At the heart of the café are its real VIPs — the cats.
Our primary mission was to create an engaging playground and a relaxing retreat for them.
A happy cat makes for a warm welcome.

​

The first floor is designed to accommodate up to 30 cats, including ample space for movement, rest, and litter needs.
The second floor is reserved for dining guests, with glass partitions used to separate the cat activity zones from food areas, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for both.

Transparency, Interaction, and Instagrammable Moments

Transparent acrylic skywalks and tunnels let guests view the cats from nearly 360 degrees, enhancing interaction without intrusion.
A dedicated “cat apartment” photo wall features a tiered climbing structure finished in KECOOLI Mineral Paint (Timeless Gray) by Rainbow Paints.
Each level allows vertical access and multiple hidden paths to the restroom area behind the wall, giving cats privacy and comfort.

Guests can use cat toys to gently gather the cats onto a balcony perch — the perfect place to capture a photo of beautiful breed cats in their element.

A Tailored Experience for Cats and Their Humans

Throughout the design process, we continuously asked ourselves:
How can we better meet the needs of cats while enhancing the customer experience?
Every detail was crafted to provide comfort, joy, and memorable interaction, creating a true haven for both felines and the people who love them.
