Rènxìng Café: A Coffee Haven Hidden in a Taichung Alley

​

Nestled within a three-story townhouse in a quiet Taichung neighborhood, Rènxìng Café is more than just a café — it’s a dream realized. The name “飪荇” (Rènxìng), a homophone for “任性” meaning "willful" or "doing things one’s own way," perfectly encapsulates the owner's long-held wish since high school to open a unique café that reflects her personal style.

Transforming a narrow townhouse into a cozy dining space was no small feat. The design team carefully tackled challenges of natural lighting and spatial flow. Using patterned tiles and metal-framed glass partitions, each floor offers a variety of dining environments — from relaxed and open, to secluded and intimate.

​

The first floor features a striking blue façade, vintage tiles, and a nostalgic wooden bar counter. Cement-textured walls and a mural of a “coffee-obsessed girl” immediately pull visitors into an imaginative, coffee-driven world.

​

The second and third floors adopt a calmer white palette, with vintage wood tones and retro metal-glass partitions evoking the feeling of strolling through a European backstreet. Every design decision — from replacing the spiral staircase with a straight stairwell to converting the balcony into a sunlit restroom and transforming the former bathroom into a private “lover’s booth” — breaks traditional boundaries.
